Eating on a budget (1)
As a single parent I know how hard it can be to please everyone come meal times. You want to buy things that are cheap and fit your budget, your children however want things that cost a little more.
In my eating on a budget series I will offer hints and tips of my own to help with the above problem and if any of you send any to me I will also offer them up to help others as well.
BAKED BEANS
Not the most inspiring food item but they can be cheap and filling and they are filled with fiber. First how many of you have reached for the cheapest tin of beans you can find only to have someone who is with you tell them they taste horrid and they prefer a more well known brand. I used to hear it all the time from my children which is why I rarely took them shopping. Instead I would leave them with a friend or family member, do my shopping, go home, put things away (making sure to hide the cheap tins they didn't like behind other tins), then go and pick my children up.
Sure different makes of beans taste differently and if all you do with your beans is heat them up then eat them the taste will come through. What I would do however is change the beans up.
Add some cheese. My children loved cheesey beans, a couple of handfuls of grated cheese stirred into the beans till it melts not only changes the flavor but also the consistency.
Spice it up. Spices and herbs are another good way to alter the flavor and to add a bit of punch to some boring beans. My children liked it when I would add some curry powder to the beans so they could have curried beans.
There are probably a multitude of other ways you could get away with using cheaper beans. Is it worth it? I think yes because granted you might only save a few pennys or a couple of cent, but it all mounts up eventually
